One Day in Yosemite National Park: How to Make the Most of a Short Trip

I'm thrilled to keep checking off my travel dreams—this time, it was Yosemite National Park in California, one of the most iconic national parks in the USA. To say it lived up to the hype would be an understatement. The raw power and breathtaking beauty of Yosemite’s landscapes left me absolutely speechless!

With only one day to explore, we had to plan carefully to make the most of our time without burning out. In this guide, I’ll share our Yosemite day hike itinerary, tips for navigating the park efficiently, and how to experience the best views and trails in just a few hours.

Whether you’re doing a quick stop or building your first Yosemite itinerary, this article will help you enjoy a perfect day hike while avoiding crowds and fatigue.
We visited the park in early June, which is a very comfortable time—warm during the day but not too cold in the morning. In my opinion, it’s the perfect season for hiking.

In Yosemite National Park, you have several accommodation options. One is to rent a tent directly within the park. The main advantages are being right next to the trail and getting to sleep surrounded by stunning nature. The downsides, however, are the high prices and how quickly campsites get booked up.

Since we had a car, we went with the second option—we rented a private house about an hour's drive from the park. We found a lovely place with all the amenities on Booking.com, perfect for a group or family.

Personally, I’m not a fan of crowded mountain trails that feel more like a marketplace, so we decided to start our hike at 6 a.m.—before the campers were awake and before other visitors staying outside the park had arrived. We parked the car in the closest parking lot to the trailhead, which saved time and made our early start even smoother.

And honestly, it was the right decision. First, the trail was nearly empty in the morning, and there was still plenty of parking. Second, we got to watch the sunrise over the mountains and see how the sunlight gradually lit up the entire landscape. It was absolutely magical.
We chose a relatively easy hiking route—visiting Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall. To make the journey more interesting, we took a circular trail. The total distance was about 17 km and took us around 5 hours, including stops for photos, tea, and snacks.

I’ll share the map a little further down. It’s worth noting that we planned the loop to avoid the crowds as much as possible and to enjoy the views in peace. That’s no small thing, considering how popular Yosemite is.

Important tip: Wear comfortable trekking shoes. I wore my Altra trail runners, which have already seen me through several hikes and have held up incredibly well. Since hiking in Yosemite isn't particularly difficult, lightweight shoes like these are the perfect choice.

As for clothing: leggings or shorts and a quick-drying T-shirt or tank top work best. A cap and sunglasses are essential. Don’t forget sunscreen—while the sun isn’t scorching, it’s still summer, so protection is key.

One more crucial item: a waterproof jacket or a Gore-Tex shell. Part of the trail runs right next to a waterfall, where you’ll be hit by a fine mist. Those without jackets were completely soaked.

And of course, don’t forget to bring plenty of water, a thermos of tea, and some tasty snacks—sandwiches, sweets, and nuts are perfect. We found a beautiful spot at the top of Nevada Falls where we could enjoy both the view and our little picnic.
